Common Medical Services You Can Get In An Imaging Center

Medical advancements have come a long way in terms of technology and precision; one notable example is diagnostic imaging. Diagnostic imaging refers to using various techniques to create images of the inside of the body. Healthcare providers can use these images to diagnose and treat different medical conditions.

An imaging center is a facility where you can get diagnostic imaging done. Here are some examples of the common medical services you can get there:

X-Rays

X-rays are images of the inside of the body created using electromagnetic radiation. Providers use this imaging test to diagnose many conditions, such as fractures, pneumonia, and arthritis. An X-ray works by passing a very small amount of electromagnetic radiation through the body, which is absorbed in different amounts by the dense internal structures. The X-rays that pass through the body are then detected by a special camera and converted into images.

You are only exposed to a small amount of radiation when you undergo an X-ray. That means the risk of developing cancer from an X-ray is extremely low.

Your provider will ask you to stand or lie on a table during an X-ray. Then, they will position the machine over the concerned area of your body. Your provider may ask you to hold your breath for a short time while taking the image.

Computed Tomography (CT) Scans

A CT scan is an X-ray that uses a computer to create images of the inside of the body. CT scans produce detailed photos because they use many layers of X-rays. Providers usually use the scan to diagnose cancer, heart disease, and lung problems.

You will lie on a table that slides into a CT machine during the scan. The imaging test usually takes several minutes.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

MRI uses a strong magnet and radio waves to capture your internal structures. MRIs can diagnose many conditions, such as cancer, heart disease, and brain disorders. During the scan, you will lie on a table that slides into an MRI machine, a large, tube-like structure. An MRI uses a strong magnet. That means you cannot have one if you have any metal in your body, like a pacemaker.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound uses sound waves to show the inside of the body. Providers usually use the technology to diagnose many conditions, such as cancer, heart disease, and kidney problems. Providers also use ultrasounds to show the development of a fetus during pregnancy.

You will lie on a table during an ultrasound, and your doctor will apply gel to your skin. They will use a handheld device called a transducer, which emits sound waves that pass through your body and create images.

Mammogram

A mammogram, or an X-ray of the breast, is used to screen for breast cancer and diagnose other problems. During a mammogram, you will stand in front of an X-ray machine. Your breast will be placed on a platform and compressed with a paddle. This imaging test will take a few minutes.

Bone Scan

A bone scan is a type of X-ray that can detect problems with bones. Bone scans can diagnose many conditions, such as cancer, fractures, and arthritis. Your provider will ask you to lie down while they inject a small amount of radioactive material into your vein. The radioactive material will travel through your body and collect in your bones, making them more visible in the scans.

Nuclear Medicine Scan

A nuclear medicine scan uses a small amount of radioactive material for diagnosing or treating various conditions. Providers usually use the test to diagnose cancer, heart disease, and thyroid problems.

Your doctor will administer the radioactive material during the scan. Then, the material will travel through your body and collect in the imaged area.
