Reasons You Need to Visit a Radiology Clinic

July 9, 2021

radiology clinic

Almost every clinical diagnosis is made using results from a radiology exam or procedure. Radiology uses medical imaging techniques such as ultrasound, X-ray, MRI, and CT scan to view what’s inside the body. The results of the exam are evaluated by a radiologist or a doctor who interprets medical images and communicates them to the referring health care provider.

There are different reasons why a patient would need to visit a radiology clinic.

For Diagnostic Testing

Your doctor may refer you to a radiology clinic for a medical imaging test if you are presenting symptoms suspected to be due to illness or disease. For example, if you see your doctor for a cough, wheezing, and shortness of breath, they may order an X-ray. An X-ray is one of the most used medical imaging tests for lung conditions. X-rays can reveal infection, inflammation, fluid in the lungs, air collection in the space around the lung, and other lung conditions such as pneumonia, emphysema, cystic fibrosis, and cancer.

The results of an X-ray and other medical imaging tests can also help rule out other medical conditions and allow the referring physician to make a definitive diagnosis and determine the best treatment options.

To Undergo a Health Screening

A health screening involves the use of medical imaging technology to detect disease in patients before it starts causing symptoms and while it’s still at a treatable stage. One of the best screening tests that can detect early-stage breast cancer is a mammogram. A mammogram uses X-ray technology to produce three-dimensional images of the breast. [The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends mammograms for women beginning the age of 50. Women who are at high risk and under 50, should discuss when to start breast cancer screening with their health care provider. It can detect breast cancer, even before a lump can be felt, which improves health outcomes for women who get screened regularly. A mammogram remains the best way to find early breast cancer.

For Disease Management

Medical imaging is also used to monitor the disease’s progression and to assess how well your body is responding to treatment. The MRI machine uses soundwaves (instead of electromagnetic radiation) to create images of what’s inside the body. It could be safer for the subsequent tracking of the disease’s progression, the effectiveness of treatment, and whether it needs to be changed.
