When Should You Have Your First and Last Mammogram?

A mammogram is a type of health screening recommended to women of a certain age. The goal of mammogram screenings is to detect early signs of breast cancer. If detected early, a woman with breast cancer has a good prognosis. A mammogram has the ability to detect breast cancer three years before other symptoms may show up.

When To Schedule Your First Mammogram

As a woman, you may be confused about when to have your first mammogram. According to the American Cancer Society, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the American College of Radiology, women should have the option to get annual mammograms beginning at the age of 40 for those who are considered average-risk.

Average-risk means no first-degree relative (mother, sister, or daughter) has been diagnosed with breast cancer, you have not been identified to have a genetic mutation (BRCA gene) that can increase the risk of breast cancer, and you’ve never had chest radiation therapy before the age of 30.

By the time a woman reaches the age of 44, a mammogram should be done annually until the age of 54. Women ages 55 or older can have mammograms every other year, provided that they’re in good health.

What About High-Risk Females?

For high-risk females, breast cancer screenings should begin as early as 30. A woman is considered high-risk if she has a strong family history of breast cancer, carries the BRCA gene mutation, or has had chest radiation therapy before the age of 30. If your mother was diagnosed at the age of 50, it is recommended that you have a mammogram at the age of 40 to establish a baseline.

When To Have Your Last Mammogram?

Women who are ages 75 or older should talk with their primary care provider about the need to have mammogram screenings. At this point, the doctor considers life expectancy in determining whether you need to continue with mammogram screenings.

Ask Your Doctor for Recommendations

If you are concerned about breast cancer or have questions about the screening procedure, do not hesitate to ask your doctor for their recommendations. Together, you will come to an informed decision using your medical history.
