8 Common Women’s Health Issues to Know About

November 20, 2020

While there are health issues common to both women and men, differences in physiology mean that women are more vulnerable to certain conditions than men. Women must see a gynecologist, obstetrician, or other doctors specializing in women’s health, so they can take necessary precautions to manage their health properly.

Among many health issues, let’s discuss the eight most common problems affecting women.

Gynecologic Cancer

Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide. Women have cancers unique to their physiology.

Breast Cancer

Women ages 50 and above are the most susceptible to developing this type of cancer. While men can also get breast cancer, the likelihood is significantly lower. It is essential to regularly check for any lumps forming in the breast area, as they are potential signs of growing tumors or cancer cells. Physicians recommend undergoing a mammogram to detect these lumps early.

Cervical Cancer

Cervical cancer is a type of cancer unique to women. This condition can affect even young adults ages 21 and above, as sexual activity plays a role in its occurrence. Cervical cancer is caused by the human papillomavirus entering the cervix, usually transmitted through sexual intercourse.

Patients diagnosed with cervical cancer will need to undergo further testing to identify the stage of cancer. This is crucial to determine treatment. Imaging tests such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), X-ray, or CT scan may help your doctor with staging.

Ovarian Cancer

Like other common cancers in women, ovarian cancer starts in the female reproductive system, specifically the ovaries. Those who have undergone or are currently undergoing menopause are the most vulnerable to this condition.

Ovarian cancer often goes undetected, and when it is diagnosed, it may be too late. The cancer cells can metastasize and affect even the lungs.

Infertility Disorders

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

Another prevalent reproductive health problem in women is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Once a woman is old enough to reproduce, she is at risk of hormonal imbalances. Signs of PCOS usually include irregular menstruation, high androgen levels, ovarian cysts, and acne. These symptoms can cause female infertility.

If you have symptoms of PCOS, consult your doctor to receive an accurate diagnosis. There is no specific test that can definitively diagnose this condition. Your doctor needs to check your medical history and conduct a physical exam. They may also recommend a pelvic exam, ultrasound, or blood tests.

Endometriosis

Endometriosis is when tissues similar to those inside the uterus begin growing outside of the uterus. This condition is prevalent in women in their reproductive years. As a result, fertility problems can arise. Symptoms usually include chronic pelvic pain, heavy menstrual periods, pain with urination, and nausea.

Endometriosis can be challenging to manage. An early diagnosis is a key factor in managing your symptoms better. Consult your doctor if you are experiencing symptoms of this condition. Diagnosis may include imaging tests such as MRI and ultrasound.

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis weakens your bones, making them more prone to fractures. Women are at significantly higher risk than men when it comes to osteoporosis. They experience fractures related to the disease up to 10 years earlier than men. Likewise, after the age of fifty, women are four times more likely to contract the disease.

At Starling Diagnostics, we offer DEXA Bone Density Scans to catch the condition early so that you can receive proper treatment before it becomes severe.

Interstitial Cystitis

Interstitial cystitis occurs when the bladder gets inflamed or irritated. Its symptoms may include pain, discomfort, frequent urination, and constantly feeling like you need to urinate. Interstitial cystitis is challenging to diagnose and is usually confirmed through ultrasound and other tests to rule out any other possible health issues.

Uterine Fibroids

Uterine fibroids are growths that occur in the uterus. Fortunately, they are non-cancerous. However, they can cause various problems, such as pain, heavy bleeding during your period, excessively long periods, and bowel problems.
