Regular Mammogram vs 3D Mammogram

August 12, 2020

mammogram

A mammogram is a screening test that utilizes X-ray technology to examine the inside of a breast. It is generally part of a woman’s annual health screening once she reaches the age of 40. However, younger women may also be recommended to undergo a mammogram if their doctor detects a lump in the breast that needs further examination.

The earlier breast cancer is detected, the better the prognosis for the patient. As such, it is important to take preventive care measures like mammograms seriously. If you’re looking to schedule a mammogram, you may have come across the terms 2D mammogram and 3D mammogram. Let’s talk about the difference between the two.

Regular or 2D Mammogram

Taking a mammogram of your breasts using the regular or conventional method involves you standing in front of an X-ray machine to take two-dimensional images of your breasts. A regular mammogram produces two images of the breast, a front view and a side view. These images are examined to detect lumps or abnormalities in the breast.

3D Mammogram

The key difference between a 2D mammogram and a 3D mammogram is the quality of images produced by the X-ray machine. A 3D mammogram uses newer software technology, which creates three-dimensional images of the breasts by compiling many more images that 2D mammograms can.

Three-dimensional images can reveal more details of the internal structures in your breasts. A number of studies have found that it finds more cancers than the regular mammogram. A three-dimensional view of the breast shows it from different angles and highlights various layers within it. This makes it easier for doctors to detect breast cancer and other abnormalities – especially in patients who have dense breast tissue, which makes detecting abnormalities difficult.

3D images of breasts also allow for more accurate determinations of the size of cancer tumors and other abnormalities. Moreover, women who get 3D mammograms have reduced incidences of false positives, saving you money, time, and uncertainty involved with repeated mammograms.

3D mammograms use newer technology, which means it may not be available in all hospitals and health centers. If you would like 3D mammograms for its advantages, make sure to check whether your chosen facility offers it.

Ultimately, choosing between a 2D and 3D mammogram comes down to your preference and your doctor’s recommendation. While there is no guidance from health organizations on whether women should choose a 3D mammogram over a 2D mammogram, given the advantages of 3D mammogram, it is often the preferred choice of patients and providers.
